Light a Candle

If you haven’t had a chance to explore The Onward Workbook yet, here is a sampling of one of the activities from this month to help you cultivate resilience while developing the habit: Focus on the Bright Spots.

In many traditions around the world, candles are symbolically lit in the shortest days of the year as a way to bring in light or beckon back the sun. Gazing at a candle flame is also a meditation practice – focusing attention on the gently flickers, shades and tones, and soft warmth that a candle emits.

Either in the morning or in the evening, or at both times, light a candle and spend time gazing at the flame. Reflect on what it means to you to “bring in the light” – perhaps to your thoughts, feelings, or spirit.

If you wish, capture your reflections on this experience.
